How much does a video intercom installation actually cost?

Video intercom pricing depends heavily on whether you're upgrading existing wiring or starting from scratch, which is the single biggest factor most online estimates don't account for. It's also the reason two seemingly identical requests, 'add a video intercom to my villa', can end up with genuinely different quotes once we've actually checked what's already at the gate.
Upgrading existing wiring
If a villa or apartment already has a working analog intercom, upgrading to a video, app-connected system by reusing existing wiring is usually the more affordable path, since the cabling work is already done. This is the more common scenario for established villa communities, where the original developer wiring is often still functional and compatible with a modern replacement unit.
A fresh install
Installing an intercom where none exists, or where existing wiring isn't compatible or reusable (older or degraded cabling, or a completely different system architecture than what a modern unit expects), costs more because it includes running new cabling in addition to the hardware itself. This is more common in properties without any existing gate intercom, or where DIY previous work needs to be redone properly.
Hardware tier is a separate decision from installation type
Beyond wiring, the intercom unit itself varies in price based on features: basic video versus a system with facial recognition or package detection, single-unit versus multiple indoor monitors around the house, and whether it integrates with a smart lock for combined video-and-access control. These are worth deciding based on how you'd actually use it day to day rather than defaulting to the most expensive tier.
What can add cost beyond the base install
Multiple indoor monitor units (one at the gate, one in the kitchen, one upstairs) add cost per unit beyond the base system. Integration with an existing smart lock or gate motor for full remote unlock adds configuration work beyond a standalone video-only setup. Distance from the gate to where indoor wiring needs to run also affects labor, similar to CCTV cable runs.
