Smart plugs vs smart switches: which should you start with?

Both are common entry points into smart home automation, and both are inexpensive, but they solve different problems and knowing which fits your situation avoids wasted money on the wrong device for what you're actually trying to control.
Smart plugs
A smart plug sits between the wall outlet and a device, letting you schedule or remote-control anything already plugged in, a lamp, a fan, a coffee machine. No wiring involved at all, and it's fully portable if you move, unplug it and take it with you to a new place without leaving anything behind.
Smart switches
A smart switch replaces the wall switch itself, controlling whatever's wired to it, usually ceiling lights. It looks more integrated and doesn't require anything plugged into a specific outlet, but installation is slightly more involved and occasionally needs a neutral wire, and unlike a plug, it stays with the property if you move rather than coming with you.
The key limitation of plugs worth knowing upfront
A smart plug can only control what's actually plugged into it, it can't control a ceiling light with no accessible plug, or anything hardwired directly into the wall. This is the main reason people eventually move from plugs to switches for lighting specifically, plugs work great for lamps and appliances, not for hardwired fixtures.
Cost and commitment comparison
Smart plugs are generally the cheaper starting point per fixture and require zero installation risk, plug it in and you're done. Smart switches cost a bit more and take slightly longer to install, but integrate more cleanly with the room, no visible extra device sitting at an outlet, since the smart switch simply looks like a normal switch.
Our recommendation
If you're starting out or renting, smart plugs are the lower-commitment option. If you're automating ceiling lights specifically and own your home, smart switches give a cleaner result. Most homes end up using both for different fixtures, plugs for lamps and appliances, switches for hardwired ceiling lighting, rather than picking one exclusively.
