Liquid spill on a laptop: what to do in the first five minutes

What you do in the first few minutes after a spill matters more than almost any other laptop emergency, the wrong instinctive reaction can turn a survivable spill into a write-off. If this is happening right now, stop reading past this section, do the steps below immediately, and come back to the rest afterward.
Do this immediately
Power off the laptop right away, don't just close the lid, a still-powered laptop with liquid inside is far more likely to short-circuit permanently, closing the lid doesn't stop the electrical current still flowing through a powered-on device. Unplug it and remove the battery if it's user-removable. Turn it upside down in a tent shape to help liquid drain away from components rather than further in, gravity is genuinely working in your favor here if you act quickly.
Don't do this
Don't turn it back on to 'check if it's fine', that's the single most common way a marginal spill becomes permanent damage, powering on a laptop with liquid still inside can complete an electrical short that wouldn't otherwise have happened. Don't use a hairdryer, heat can damage components and push liquid further inside rather than out, and don't shake or tilt it around trying to get liquid out, which can spread it to more components than the original spill reached.
Why the type of liquid matters
Plain water is the least damaging spill, since it doesn't leave a residue behind once dried, though it can still cause a short while wet. Sugary drinks, coffee, and juice are considerably more damaging, since they leave a sticky, conductive residue behind after drying that can cause ongoing corrosion and intermittent faults for months if not properly cleaned. This is exactly why a spill that seemed to 'dry out fine' can develop mysterious problems weeks later.
Why waiting to bring it in is risky too
Beyond the first five minutes, time still matters: residue left uncleaned continues to corrode contacts and connections the longer it sits. A laptop that survived the initial spill without a short can still develop problems over following weeks from residue that was never properly cleaned out, which is why getting it assessed promptly, not just surviving the first attempt to turn it back on, matters.
