Should you fully drain your laptop battery before charging?

This advice was genuinely true decades ago, for older nickel-based batteries, but modern laptops use lithium-ion batteries, which behave very differently, and the old advice actively works against them now, one of those pieces of tech wisdom that outlived the technology it was actually true for.
Why it's outdated
Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster from full discharge cycles, not slower. Keeping charge roughly between 20% and 80% where possible is generally better for long-term battery health than routinely draining to zero, the opposite of what the old nickel-battery advice recommended.
Why the UAE climate specifically makes this worse
Heat accelerates lithium-ion battery degradation more than almost any other single factor, and the combination of a hot climate plus a laptop occasionally left in a parked car or near a sunny window compounds battery wear faster than the same habits would in a milder climate. Battery care genuinely matters more here than the generic advice written for a global audience usually accounts for.
What actually helps battery longevity
Avoiding leaving a laptop plugged in at 100% for extended periods when avoidable, keeping it out of high heat (a real factor in the UAE, especially left in a hot car), and using manufacturer-provided battery health settings where available all matter more than discharge cycles, many modern laptops include an optimized charging mode specifically designed to reduce time spent at full charge.
When we do recommend a full cycle
Occasionally, for battery calibration purposes on a laptop reporting inaccurate battery percentages, but this is a specific troubleshooting step, not a routine habit worth maintaining, a one-off diagnostic action, not something to build into regular use.
