Setting up automatic cloud backup so you never lose a file again

Manual backups fail for a simple reason: they depend on remembering to do them, and life gets in the way. Automatic backup removes that dependency entirely, which is the whole point, a backup strategy that relies on human memory isn't really a strategy at all.

What actually needs backing up

Documents, photos, and any work files are the priority, applications and the operating system itself can always be reinstalled, but personal files that only exist in one place are what's genuinely at risk, that distinction is worth being clear on so backup storage isn't wasted on things that don't actually need protecting.

Choosing between cloud and local backup

Cloud backup (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud) protects against device loss, theft, or damage, since it's stored elsewhere entirely. A local backup drive is faster to restore from but doesn't protect against the device and backup being lost together, a fire, theft, or flood affecting both at once, an unlikely but real scenario a local-only backup doesn't cover. Using both together covers the most scenarios.

Why testing a restore matters as much as the backup itself

A backup that's never been tested for restoration is an assumption, not a guarantee, files can silently fail to sync, permissions issues can prevent access, or a backup service's app can simply stop working without an obvious error. Actually restoring a test file, not just confirming files 'look backed up' in the interface, is the only real way to know a backup would work when you actually need it.
