Standing desk vs traditional desk: does it actually matter?

6 min read

Standing desks are heavily marketed as a health upgrade, and there's a real benefit, just a more modest and specific one than the marketing usually implies, worth separating from the more dramatic health claims sometimes attached to the product category.

What standing desks genuinely help with

Alternating between sitting and standing through the day reduces the health impact of prolonged uninterrupted sitting, and many people find it helps with afternoon energy and posture variety. The benefit comes from alternating, not from standing all day, which brings its own fatigue and can create new discomfort if done to excess.

What it doesn't replace

A standing desk doesn't fix a badly positioned monitor or a wrong keyboard height, the same ergonomic basics apply whether you're sitting or standing, and a standing desk used with poor screen height just moves the same problem to a different posture, it doesn't solve it, just relocates it.

The adjustment habit matters more than the desk itself

A motorized sit-stand desk that's set once and never adjusted delivers essentially none of the alternating benefit, since the actual value comes from genuinely switching positions through the day, not from owning the capability to switch. Setting a reminder to change position every hour or two, at least initially while building the habit, matters as much as the desk mechanism itself.

Our recommendation

If budget allows, a sit-stand desk that lets you alternate is genuinely worth it. If not, a well set up traditional desk with correct screen and keyboard height gets you most of the ergonomic benefit for less cost, the fundamentals matter more than which desk type they're applied to.
