A smart home that suddenly stops automating properly, lights that don't trigger, routines that silently fail, is one of the more disorienting tech problems, since nothing looks obviously broken, everything still 'works' individually, it just doesn't work together anymore.

A router or firmware update changing network settings, particularly if it altered your WiFi name, password, or switched devices to a different band, is the single most common cause of smart devices suddenly going quiet, since many devices don't automatically reconnect to a changed network without being manually reconfigured.
Other frequent causes
An app or firmware update on the smart home hub or a specific device that changed how it authenticates, or a device's WiFi connection silently dropping without the rest of the network being affected, are also common and easy to miss, since the rest of the network appears completely normal while one specific device has quietly fallen off.
Why isolating which device is actually the problem matters
When several automations fail at once, it's tempting to assume the whole system is broken, but it's often one specific device or hub losing connection that several other automations happened to depend on. Testing each device's connection individually, rather than assuming a total system failure, usually narrows the actual cause down much faster than reconfiguring everything from scratch.
