When it's worth repairing a laptop vs replacing it

4 min read

Age alone isn't a good enough reason to replace a laptop, plenty of five-year-old machines are still perfectly capable once the actual fault is addressed. The real question is what's broken and what it costs to fix relative to the laptop's remaining value.

Repairs that are almost always worth it

A dead battery, failing fan, cracked hinge, or slow hard drive are all relatively inexpensive, fast fixes that can add years of usable life to an otherwise solid laptop. If everything else works and the laptop meets your daily needs, these repairs are close to always worth doing.

When replacement makes more sense

A failed motherboard, a laptop that's already had multiple major repairs, or one that's genuinely too slow for what you need even after a repair, that's when the maths tips toward replacement. We're upfront when a repair cost is approaching the value of a comparable replacement.

What we do on a diagnostic visit

We identify the actual fault first, then give you a straight repair cost against what a similar replacement laptop would cost, so you're deciding with real numbers instead of guessing.
