5GHz vs 2.4GHz WiFi: which devices should use which

Most modern routers broadcast both bands, and most devices choose automatically, but understanding the difference helps when something isn't connecting the way you'd expect, or when a specific device just won't connect at all and you're not sure why.

2.4GHz

Longer range and better at penetrating walls, but slower and more crowded, since most smart home devices, older phones, and IoT gadgets use it by default. Good for devices further from the router or that don't need much bandwidth, and often the only band older smart plugs, bulbs, and sensors support at all.

5GHz

Faster with less interference, but shorter range and weaker through walls. Better for devices near the router doing bandwidth-heavy things, streaming, video calls, gaming, where the extra speed and reduced congestion genuinely matter to the experience.

The most common problem this setting causes

If your router broadcasts one combined network name for both bands, some older smart home devices that only support 2.4GHz can fail to connect during setup, since the app may attempt to join them to whichever band the phone happens to be on at that moment. Temporarily splitting into separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz network names during setup, then merging them back, is a common workaround for stubborn smart device pairing issues.
