2MP vs 4MP vs 8MP security cameras: do you actually need 4K?

Higher resolution genuinely helps with identifying faces or license plates at a distance, but for most home coverage needs, confirming who's at the door, general activity monitoring, a 2MP or 4MP camera is already more than adequate. 8MP or 4K mainly earns its cost for specific long-distance or wide-area coverage.

What resolution actually changes in practice

More megapixels means more detail retained when you zoom into footage after the fact, most valuable when the subject is far from the camera or the field of view is wide.

Where 2MP or 4MP genuinely holds up

Close-range coverage like front doors, gates, and indoor areas, where the subject is naturally close to the camera, is where resolution beyond this becomes diminishing returns for actually identifying someone.

When higher resolution actually earns its cost

Long driveways, wide property perimeters, or anywhere the camera needs to cover a large area while still being able to zoom in and identify detail afterward, is where 8MP or 4K genuinely pays off.

The tradeoff nobody mentions: storage

Higher resolution footage takes up meaningfully more storage space, whether local NVR or cloud, which matters for how much recorded history you can actually keep before older footage gets overwritten or deleted.

What we recommend

We recommend resolution based on the actual distance and coverage area for each specific camera position, not a blanket "always get the highest resolution" recommendation that ignores the storage and cost tradeoff.

Key terms

Megapixel (MP)
A measure of how much detail a camera sensor captures. Higher megapixel counts retain more detail when footage is zoomed in after the fact, most useful at greater distances.
4K
A resolution roughly equivalent to an 8MP camera, offering the most detail retention but also the largest file sizes and storage use.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 4K cameras for my home?

Only for wide-area or long-distance coverage. Most close-range spots, like a front door or gate, are well served by 2MP or 4MP.

Does higher resolution mean better night vision?

Not necessarily. Night vision quality depends more on the camera's sensor and infrared or color-night-vision technology than pixel count alone.

Does higher resolution use more storage?

Yes, meaningfully more, which affects how much footage history a system can actually retain.
